Why the spring matters
The spring system helps counterbalance the door. When it fails, the door may become very heavy or uneven. The opener is not a substitute for a working counterbalance system.
Do not use the release as a workaround
A release disconnects the door from the opener. With a damaged spring or an unbalanced door, that can be dangerous, especially when the door is raised. Do not pull it on a raised or partly raised door to try to get a vehicle out.
If your car is trapped
Arrange another way to travel if possible and call a trained door systems technician. Do not gather helpers to lift the door, clamp it open or crawl underneath it. An urgent appointment does not make damaged hardware safe.
What to ask before the visit
Explain the door position, visible spring gap and any loose cables. Ask about the arrival window, callout fee and the estimate process. Keep everyone clear of the opening until it has been assessed.
Make the service call easier
Note the opener model, describe what the door does and explain where it has stopped. Ask about coverage for your Leominster address, the visit fee and whether the provider will give a written estimate before work begins. You do not need to diagnose the failed part yourself.
Keep the provider's name and contact details with any quote or warranty. A recommendation to replace a part should come with a reason, not just a promise that a more expensive option will solve the problem.
Safety references
These guides follow the lifting-hardware and emergency-release warnings in the Chamberlain owner's manual. For model-specific safety checks, see LiftMaster safety guidance. A manufacturer link does not imply an affiliation or certification.
